Our Story
For nearly 50 years, Transportation Alternatives (TA) has led the movement for safe, equitable streets in New York City. Advanced Training Day
Skilled TA organizers return to the complicated subject of how New York City politics works in real life. This training makes accessible the inner workings of the county committees, political clubs, and even judgeships, and how these interact with the decisions of community boards, elected officials, and city agencies. Understanding how politics in NYC works is the first step to understanding how to win campaigns and make change.
Round One:
-
Many of us have jumped into a campaign mid-stream, learned the ropes, and even triumphantly won important changes. Many of us have also struggled to take those victories and transition them to the next big thing. Join this training to learn what it takes to start something entirely new, grow momentum, and attract a critical mass of supporters. What it takes to start a campaign is often entirely different than what it takes to finish one!

Round Two:
-
Every campaign is working to win the support of key decision makers -- these are people, often elected officials (but not always!) -- who can help make our campaign goals a reality. What factors into their decisions? Join this workshop as we dig deeper into the question “Who is the key decision maker, and what makes them tick”?
-
Any successful campaign has leaders who are able to convincingly convey their messages to the press. But talking to the press can be easier said than done. Attend this training to learn how to effectively message to the media, speak confidently to the camera, and get your point across to key audiences.
Round Three:
-
Powerful, pointed research is essential for any campaign. But what makes research practical? Join TA’s resident researcher as we learn how to direct our research questions to amplify our campaigns. Learn how to identify research that can be done with your community group, can garner media attention, and inspire people to take to the streets to demand change.
-
TA organizers have seen it all. And if you’ve ever left a community meeting feeling confused, disempowered, dejected, or alienated, it’s likely because some participants were practicing the “Dark Arts.” At this training, learn to recognize some common oppositional tricks used by opponents of safer, more people-friendly streets (as well as WHY they can be effective). The good news is that every strategy has a counter-strategy, so come to this training to really be prepared for anything.

Donate to TA With Your Donor Advised Fund Account
Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are an increasingly-popular way to manage your charitable giving. If you’ve already established a DAF of your own, you can use this handy tool to make a grant designation to Transportation Alternatives directly from your Fidelity or Schwab account. Just select your account provider and an amount to donate, and you’ll be taken to your Fidelity or Schwab account.
What is a Donor Advised Fund?
Creating a Donor Advised Fund is a convenient, low-cost way to supporting the causes you care about, and reap maximum tax benefits. It’s a bit like establishing your own personal foundation – but because your fund is managed by a public charity, you have flexibility and freedom to manage your giving.
How does it work?
1. Establish your DAF by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program – whether through a national fund like Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, Schwab Charitable, or a local community foundation.
2. Manage the investment allocation of your fund as you would any other assets. Any investment growth is tax free.
3. Recommend grants, with the choice of being recognized or remaining anonymous.
Questions?
While we can’t provide financial advice, we’d be happy to talk to you about creative ways to give to TA! Contact Amy Klein, Director of Development, at amy.klein@transalt.org.
+ Gifts of Stock
+ Bequests
+ Make a Qualified Charitable Contribution

Donating stock is an easy and effective way to support Transportation Alternatives’ work for safe streets and a better New York City. Donating stock benefits Transportation Alternatives the same way a cash gift does – and as the donor, you benefit in several other ways:
1. You get an immediate income tax deduction for the full market value of your gift
2. You pay no capital gains taxes on the shares you donate
3. You can avoid triggering the federal alternative minimum tax
Giving a gift of stock is simple. If you manage your investments online, you (or your broker) can transfer shares directly to TA’s Charles Schwab account, using the below account information. Please notify Transportation Alternatives of any incoming gifts of stock.
Charles Schwab
DTC Clearing Number: 0164
Account number: 2783-0207
Account Title: Transportation Alternatives
T.A. Tax ID: 51-0186015
If you hold the physical shares, you can mail or deliver the certificates to our office (there’s no need to make any special endorsement or assignment):
Transportation Alternatives
Attn: Development
111 John Street, Suite 260
New York, NY 10038
We want to put your donation to work effectively and quickly -- that’s why TA’s policy is to sell donated shares as soon as we receive them. It’s important that you contact us before initiating a transfer.
Notifications or questions: Please contact Amy Klein, Director of Development, at amy.klein@transalt.org.

For 50 years, Transportation Alternatives’ work for safer streets and a healthier city has been sustained by the financial support of our dues-paying members. Member support has made TA one of New York City’s most respected and effective advocacy organizations.
Together, we’ve transformed New York City’s streets – adding protected bike lanes, pedestrian spaces and America’s largest public bike share program. But these achievements can only be protected if TA has the strength and resources to continue the fight for safer streets.
Including TA in your will is a powerful way to sustain TA’s work for years to come. A gift plan allows you to protect your family’s assets, and meet your charitable goals by providing a stable financial future for Transportation Alternatives.
Bequests
Making a bequest to TA in your will is a practical, powerful option that anyone can afford. There are several ways to make a bequest through your will:
1. Specific bequest: Choose a specific percentage, dollar amount or asset (stocks, retirement funds) you would like to leave to Transportation Alternatives.
2. Residual bequest: After you’ve provided for your loved ones, name Transportation Alternatives as a recipient of a percentage or all of your remaining estate.
3. Contingent bequest: Name Transportation Alternatives as a beneficiary in the event that other named beneficiaries do not survive you.
Suggested language
"I give (specific amount, percentage or residual amount) to Transportation Alternatives, organized and existing under the laws of New York, having its offices at 111 John St, Ste 260, New York, NY 10038 at the time of this writing, to be used for its general purposes."
Beneficiary Designations
Designating Transportation Alternatives as a beneficiary of your retirement plan (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), Keogh Plans or profit-sharing plans) is perhaps the easiest way of making a legacy gift to Transportation Alternatives. Request a beneficiary designation from your plan administrator and use the following information to leave a percentage of your plan to TA:
Transportation Alternatives
111 John Street, Suite 260
New York, NY 10038
Federal taxpayer identification number: 51-0186015
If you manage your retirement account online, naming TA as a beneficiary should only take a few minutes. Using the beneficiary designation form means that your gift avoids probate and can help reduce estate taxes.
Questions
For more information on the many options for making a meaningful legacy gift to TA, contact Amy Klein, Director of Development, at amy.klein@transalt.org.
If you have already arranged for a planned gift to TA, please notify us so we can acknowledge and honor your commitment. We would be pleased to list your name in TA’s Annual Report and to offer lifetime TA membership with all attendant benefits.
Legal Counsel
Because of the complexity of estate planning, it is important that your attorney structures your estate and writes your will or trust so your wishes are clearly articulated. The information on this page is meant to educate, and should not be understood as legal advice.

When you reach 70 and 1/2 years old, you can make a donation from one's IRA or 401k that is fully tax deductible. In the year you reach 72, you will be required to make a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), which is taxable income. To fulfill the Required Minimum Distribution, one can make a Qualified Charitable Contribution and not pay taxes. Learn more about your IRA and Qualified Charitable Contributions.
Support FSS
Your gift will support Families for Safe Streets' and Transportation Alternatives' work to end the epidemic of traffic violence and support those personally impacted.
Intro To Activism Series
In this virtual training series, each week you will learn a key concept in activism: how to plan a campaign, be an effective public speaker, use social media to amplify your message, build effective coalitions, and convince your elected officials to support your work.
Together these courses will provide you the foundation you need to be an effective grassroots advocate for your cause.
The next series begins on Wednesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. Visit our registration page to sign up for the five-week session.
Rules of the Road
-
Pedestrians always have the right of way. Always yield to pedestrians. As our potential to cause harm increases on the street, so does our responsibility to others. Slowing down and giving someone the respect they deserve will go a long way towards fostering a sense of shared responsibility that will ultimately make NYC streets better for cyclists, pedestrians, and even drivers.
-
Don’t stop in the crosswalk. Leave them clear so pedestrians can cross easily. (Law: VTL §1231)
-
You hate to see cars in bike lanes. Pedestrians hate to see bikes on the sidewalk. (Law: AC § 1976)
-
Ride in the direction of traffic -- and make no mistake, when you’re on a bike, you are traffic! (Law: VTL §1231)
-
No one can see how good-looking your bikes is if you ride through intersections without stopping. And new cyclists will follow your example. (Law: VTL §1231)
-
Front and rear lights are required if you’re riding at night. (Law: VTL §1236) Having a bell lets people know you’re approaching -- and they’re required on all bikes being operated in New York City. (Law: VTL §1236)
-
Helmets are a good idea, and they’re required by law in the State of New York if you’re under the age of 14.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, biking is a crucial form of transportation for health care workers and other essential workers. Transportation Alternatives’ Bike Match is connecting New Yorkers in need with bicycles. If you need a bike or have one to donate, please let us know.

Have you been involved in a crash while riding your bike? Look no further.
Transportation Alternatives is frequently asked to connect injured cyclists and pedestrians with legal counsel. Recent Victories
-
14th Street PeopleWay
Retaining no vestige of its gridlocked past near Union Square, the M14– once Manhattan’s slowest bus route— has been engineered with a few simple traffic calming techniques to put bus riders first. With priority for bus passengers and commercial needs, unnecessary trips made by car have dramatically reduced across the entire 14th Street corridor— freeing up enough public space to allow movement for the masses: expansions of sidewalk space, 5mph slow streets, and protected bicycle lane facilities adjacent to this transit miracle.
-
#Fix6th Avenue
A long standing campaign to build a central safe corridor on Manhattan’s wife Avenues, in Spring 2020 advocates demonstrated that despite a public health crisis, New Yorkers can still mobilize to online public forums and demand change. With a traffic safety uptick and vision zero emergency familiar to everyone in Midtown, the vital continuation of the 6th Avenue complete street, to provide room for buses, bicycles and pedestrian safety— allows safe access through the most dire and dense parts of Midtown, and safely to Central Park.

Central Park West
After the tragic death of a young woman riding a Citi Bike using the unprotected bicycle facility, Council Member Helen Rosenthal joined TA advocates to demand a two-way protected bicycle facility, and in her words, extend the safety project to encircle the entire park and protect park goers on every side of the park. With nearly 300 public participants at a public meeting on the topic, and after a protest outside the residence where a counter lawsuit was proposed, Upper West Side advocates knew that the battle for safety over parking must be won
