About Us

We reclaim New York City from cars, transforming our streets into safe, sustainable, and equitable places to walk, bike, take transit, gather, and thrive.

FAQ

  • Transportation Alternatives (TA) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit advocacy organization operating in New York City and supported by thousands of members and volunteers.

Since our founding in 1973, TA has worked in all five boroughs, advocating for innovative transportation policies, improvements in traffic safety, and increased access to the street for people walking, biking, and riding public transit.

  • Families for Safe Streets (FSS) is a group of spouses, children, siblings, and parents who have lost a loved one or have themselves been injured in a traffic crash, and who are organized around the fight for safe streets. FSS is an initiative of TA. Since FSS’ founding in 2014, more than a dozen local FSS chapters have formed in the United States and Canada. If you have been injured or lost a loved one in a traffic crash and are interested in joining FSS, email info@familiesforsafestreets.org or call (844) 377-7337 (844-FSS-PEER).

  • At any given time, our staff and volunteer activists are fighting for 20+ local and citywide campaigns, from legislative organizing to passing new traffic safety laws at the city and state levels to neighborhood-by-neighborhood efforts to secure new bike lanes and public space. You can see some of our current and recent campaigns here. The best way to stay up-to-date on TA’s advocacy is to subscribe, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • If you are still at the scene, stay where you are, and if it feels safe for you to do so, call the police. Whether or not you call the police, take as many photos as possible of the scene, including the position of the vehicle relative to you and your bicycle if you were riding one, and the vehicle, license plate, driver’s face, driver’s license, and vehicle registration. Contact a lawyer as soon as possible. While TA does not recommend any specific lawyers, these lawyers represent cyclists in traffic crashes and support TA through advertisements and event sponsorships.

Being in a crash is a traumatic event. Comprised of individuals who have been seriously injured or lost loved ones in crashes, Families for Safe Streets confronts traffic violence through advocacy and support.

  • While traffic crashes have historically been referred to as “accidents” with the implication that when people are killed and injured by cars, it is a random and unpredictable event. This is a dangerous and false impression. Traffic crashes are predictable and preventable problems, caused by dangerous streets and unsafe drivers. Take the pledge to not say “accident.”
