More Ways to Give

Individual Giving

  • Making a gift in honor or in memory of a loved one simultaneously celebrates someone special and supports safe streets and equitable transportation in New York City.

At your request, TA will send a personalized card to the individual (or family) being honored or recognized.

  • Donate to TA With Your Donor Advised Fund Account

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are an increasingly-popular way to manage your charitable giving. If you’ve already established a DAF of your own, you can use this handy tool to make a grant designation to Transportation Alternatives directly from your Fidelity or Schwab account. Just select your account provider and an amount to donate, and you’ll be taken to your Fidelity or Schwab account.

What is a Donor Advised Fund?

Creating a Donor Advised Fund is a convenient, low-cost way to supporting the causes you care about, and reap maximum tax benefits. It’s a bit like establishing your own personal foundation – but because your fund is managed by a public charity, you have flexibility and freedom to manage your giving.

    How does it work?

    1. Establish your DAF by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program – whether through a national fund like Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, Schwab Charitable, or a local community foundation.

    2. Manage the investment allocation of your fund as you would any other assets. Any investment growth is tax free.

    3. Recommend grants, with the choice of being recognized or remaining anonymous.

    Questions?

  • Donating stock is an easy and effective way to support Transportation Alternatives’ work for safe streets and a better New York City. Donating stock benefits Transportation Alternatives the same way a cash gift does – and as the donor, you benefit in several other ways:

    1. You get an immediate income tax deduction for the full market value of your gift

    2. You pay no capital gains taxes on the shares you donate

    3. You can avoid triggering the federal alternative minimum tax

Giving a gift of stock is simple. If you manage your investments online, you (or your broker) can transfer shares directly to TA’s Charles Schwab account, using the below account information. Please notify Transportation Alternatives of any incoming gifts of stock.

    Charles Schwab
    DTC Clearing Number: 0164
    Account number: 2783-0207
    Account Title: Transportation Alternatives
    T.A. Tax ID: 51-0186015

If you hold the physical shares, you can mail or deliver the certificates to our office (there’s no need to make any special endorsement or assignment):

    Transportation Alternatives
    Attn: Development
    111 John Street, Suite 260
    New York, NY 10038

We want to put your donation to work effectively and quickly — that’s why TA’s policy is to sell donated shares as soon as we receive them. It’s important that you contact us before initiating a transfer.

  • For 50 years, Transportation Alternatives’ work for safer streets and a healthier city has been sustained by the financial support of our dues-paying members. Member support has made TA one of New York City’s most respected and effective advocacy organizations.

Together, we’ve transformed New York City’s streets – adding protected bike lanes, pedestrian spaces and America’s largest public bike share program. But these achievements can only be protected if TA has the strength and resources to continue the fight for safer streets.

Including TA in your will is a powerful way to sustain TA’s work for years to come. A gift plan allows you to protect your family’s assets, and meet your charitable goals by providing a stable financial future for Transportation Alternatives.

    Bequests

Making a bequest to TA in your will is a practical, powerful option that anyone can afford. There are several ways to make a bequest through your will:

    1. Specific Bequest: Choose a specific percentage, dollar amount or asset (stocks, retirement funds) you would like to leave to Transportation Alternatives.

    2. Residual Bequest: After you’ve provided for your loved ones, name Transportation Alternatives as a recipient of a percentage or all of your remaining estate.

    3. Contingent Bequest: Name Transportation Alternatives as a beneficiary in the event that other named beneficiaries do not survive you.

    Suggested Language

"I give (specific amount, percentage or residual amount) to Transportation Alternatives, organized and existing under the laws of New York, having its offices at 111 John St, Ste 260, New York, NY 10038 at the time of this writing, to be used for its general purposes."

    Beneficiary Designations

Designating Transportation Alternatives as a beneficiary of your retirement plan (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), Keogh Plans or profit-sharing plans) is perhaps the easiest way of making a legacy gift to Transportation Alternatives. Request a beneficiary designation from your plan administrator and use the following information to leave a percentage of your plan to TA:

    Transportation Alternatives
    111 John Street, Suite 260
    New York, NY 10038
    Federal taxpayer identification number: 51-0186015

If you manage your retirement account online, naming TA as a beneficiary should only take a few minutes. Using the beneficiary designation form means that your gift avoids probate and can help reduce estate taxes.

    Questions

For more information on the many options for making a meaningful legacy gift to TA, contact Jacqi Masseo, Director of Development, at jacqi.masseo@transalt.org.

If you have already arranged for a planned gift to TA, please notify us so we can acknowledge and honor your commitment. We would be pleased to list your name in TA’s Annual Report and to offer lifetime TA membership with all attendant benefits.

    Legal Counsel

Because of the complexity of estate planning, it is important that your attorney structures your estate and writes your will or trust so your wishes are clearly articulated. The information on this page is meant to educate, and should not be understood as legal advice.

  • Throughout our history, Transportation Alternatives has executed large-scale events for cyclists, urbanists, and New Yorkers from all walks of life. And thanks to our advocacy work, safety innovations like pedestrian islands, retimed traffic signals, and a lower speed limit have saved the lives of countless New Yorkers. Hundreds of miles of new bike lanes, including 80 miles of protected bike lanes, are used by hundreds of thousands of cyclists every year. New public plazas reclaimed from vehicle space now cover our urban landscape.

With your support, TA is changing the very structure of NYC. And we’re just getting started.

    Become a Transportation Alternatives Sponsor

TA sponsorship opportunities are unique options for companies seeking to tap into New York City’s booming urban cyclist and environmentally-minded demographic. As the organization New Yorkers trust to advocate for safer streets and a healthier, greener city, TA engages people who commute by bike, by transit, or by foot, as well as recreational cyclists and civic leaders.

Our Bike Tours attract a diverse cycling community of over 8,000 riders: dedicated cyclists, families, commuters, and people just looking for a healthy weekend challenge. Our Bike Month programming throughout the month of May — including Commuter Stations, a city-wide Bike to Work Challenge, and our annual Bike Home from Work Party — engages over 20,000 commuting cyclists each year (on a daily basis throughout the month). Over the past few years, we have been branching into more digital partnerships, helping brands launch apps, run contests, and build brand affinity.

Aside from this, we have a large and dedicated audience of active NYC followers your brand can engage with in many creative ways. We work with you to tailor your sponsorship experience, develop strategy, and execute our plans to best showcase your brand. TA treats each sponsor as a valued partner. The flexibility of our sponsorship program is part of what makes it so unique.
