Better Buses

Bus service is the most affordable and efficient way to quickly multiply the reach of a transportation network and provide a safe, affordable alternative to driving. Getting more people on buses and out of cars will make our streets less congested, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce childhood asthma rates, and even make our streets better for those who have to drive. But today, New York City’s buses are the slowest in the nation and less than 2% of streets have a bus lane. The most bus dependent neighborhoods have more Black and Latino residents, and fewer bus lanes. Making the bus a real option for all New Yorkers requires making the bus efficient, reliable, accessible, and affordable. TA is fighting for:

  • Expanded bus routes and more bus lanes in every neighborhood

  • A bus rapid transit system for New Yorkers with car-free busways in every borough expedited with traffic signal priority, bus bulbs, and off-board fare collection

  • Bus shelters and other bus stop infrastructure to protect New Yorkers who ride the bus from dangerous heat and other hazards
