Protected Bike Lanes & Greenways
Bicycling can improve public health, reduce pollution and congestion, grant freedom of movement, and expand access to opportunity at a low cost. But the number of people who choose to ride a bike – especially the number of women who choose to ride a bike – directly depends on access to safe protected bike lanes and greenways. Safe, separated space on the street reduces cycling on the sidewalk, drivers speeding, and injuries for all road users – but only 1.7% of streets have a protected bike lane. All New Yorkers deserve the freedom to choose to ride a bike and access to a safe network of protected, car-free spaces in which to do it. TA is fighting to:
Build new protected bike lanes, particularly in neighborhoods that lack them
Expand existing greenways to grow the city’s off-street bike network
Complete the NYC Streets Plan by creating a connected bike network across New York City
Expand both bike and pedestrian access to New York City’s bridges
