E-Bikes & E-Micromobility
Electric micromobliity, such as e-bikes and e-scooters, can shift trips out of cars and make biking a viable transportation choice for elderly New Yorkers, people with mobility issues, parents who need to transport children, and delivery workers who spend long hours on the roads. It’s no wonder that e-bike use is booming. But the e-bike boom, combined with New York City’s congested and mismanaged streets, and the predatory working conditions employed by delivery app companies has put New Yorkers into conflict. Efforts to “license” the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who ride bikes will be an ineffective, expensive, bureaucratic nightmare – as demonstrated by the many cities that have passed and repealed such laws. A solution to these overlapping safety concerns is for delivery app companies to pay for the privilege of operating a business in New York City and operate by a standard that does not harm its workers, any other New Yorkers, or the city at large. Instead, New Yorkers need infrastructure and policies that support e-bikes as a safe and affordable transportation choice and a critical mobility device. TA is fighting for:
Double-wide protected bike lanes that leave room for all types of bikes
Public charging infrastructure that keeps people safe from under-regulated batteries
Systemic regulation of predatory app companies that profit off unsafe labor practices
An end to the call to license e-bikes and e-micromobility
