Only a few days left to protect red light cameras
Dear Friend,
Last week, we wrote to you about the urgent need to protect New York City’s life-saving red light camera program.
With just a few days left this session, we need you to take action to ensure these cameras stay on.
Here are the facts:
Red light running rose 56% between 2020 and 2023.
Last year, 39 New Yorkers were killed by reckless drivers running a red light.
Despite this, state law limits red light cameras to just 1% of signalized intersections.
We need more red light cameras to protect pedestrians, bike riders, and other drivers on our streets.
Can we count on you to send a message in support to your state lawmakers?
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
Red Hook needs a bus to Manhattan. With congestion pricing starting next month, it’s time for the MTA and the city to finally fix a historic transportation injustice by launching a direct bus route between Red Hook and Manhattan. We’re partnering with local residents, community groups, and stakeholders to deliver this much-needed bus. Join us today.
Our Miracle on 42nd Street campaign continues. Before the 14th Street busway opened, it could take 45 minutes to get across town. Now, it's less than 25 minutes. The same transformation is possible on 42nd Street with a dedicated, car-free busway. Join our campaign for a Miracle on 42nd Street today.
In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:
Council districts with fewer trees are hotter, more polluted, more flood-prone, and have higher rates of heat-related mortality. Thankfully, new trees are being planted across New York City. See where they’re located in Gothamist.
A new protected bike lane is going in between White Plains Road and the Pelham Parkway Greenway, reports Streetsblog.
See coverage of our Miracle on 42nd Street campaign in PIX11 and how a car-free busway would benefit you.
TWO THINGS TO DO
We need real alternatives ahead of the summer’s G train shutdown. With construction kicking off this summer on much-needed improvements to the G train, we’re calling on the MTA and the city to deliver dedicated bus lanes, increased bus service, and better, safer biking during the 10-week shutdown. Join the MTA and DOT at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at John Ericsson Middle School or virtually for a town hall on the effects of the summer shutdown. Reach out to our North Brooklyn committee to learn how to support.
Join us for a safe streets walking tour in Flatbush. Our Flatbush Streets for People campaign is hosting a free walking tour highlighting sustainable transportation infrastructure — and where more work needs to be done. Join us at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 2, outside the Cortelyou Road Q station. RSVP today!
ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW
Tell your Council Member to get New York City’s streets ready for congestion pricing. We are calling on the New York City Council to create and pass a bill package which prepares New York City's streets for congestion pricing through pop-up bus lanes during subway closures, new benefits for commuters, more pedestrian space, and secure bike parking. Take action today.
