Act Now to Protect New York City's Red-Light Camera Program

Red light cameras are critical for preventing crashes from running lights, but New York City’s successful red light camera program will expire this year. Without immediate legislative action, we risk losing this vital safety measure. The New York State legislature must reauthorize and expand this lifesaving program to protect everyone on our streets from reckless drivers.

Between 2020 and 2023, red-light running incidents surged by an alarming 56%. Despite this rise in dangerous driving, current state law only allows red light cameras on 1% of signalized intersections. We can’t afford to let this program lapse and compromise our safety – and we also need to fight to expand the program to more intersections. Red light cameras only work where they exist.

Your voice matters! Join us in urging lawmakers to take swift action. Sign our petition and help us ensure the continuation and expansion of the red-light camera program. Together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

Introducing Manhattan Committee’s Miracle on 42nd Street Campaign! We are excited to launch our Miracle on 42nd Street campaign – a bold vision for a street that puts people first. Imagine a Midtown where streets prioritize people over cars, and where buses flow freely without the chaos of congestion. The reality on 42nd Street tells a different story – narrow sidewalks and a lack of protected bike lanes put the safety of cyclists and pedestrians at risk. Join us in our effort to turn 42nd Street into the bustling, pedestrian-friendly paradise it's meant to be.

Elected officials, residents, and advocates call for a Bedford Avenue protected bike lane! Along with 2,625 residents and members of the Better Bedford Avenue Coalition, elected officials have penned a joint letter advocating for the long-awaited installation of a protected bike lane on Bedford Avenue. Despite assurances from Mayor Adams last year, the promised summer installation never materialized. Now, one year later, frustration mounts as Bedford Avenue in District 36 remains without a single protected bike lane, despite being home to a majority of car-free residents. Sign our petition for a Better Bedford Avenue and demand action today.

In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:

  • New Citi Bike charging docks are rolling out in Hell’s Kitchen and Greenpoint, reports amNY. These new docks will get cars off the streets, allowing electric bikes to charge in the dock without needing someone to come swap batteries.

  • Targeting working cyclists in New Jersey or New York isn’t the solution. Read Los Deliveristas’ op-ed in the New Jersey Monitor advocating for investing in safe streets for workplace and community safety.

  • Check out this new op-ed in Streetsblog for the launch of our campaign on 42nd Street. Imagine transforming 42nd Street from a congested, vehicle-packed street into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with wide sidewalks and rapid bus transit.

  • After this weekend, 2024 has become one of the deadliest years for Queens in the Vision Zero era, according to data we compiled and reported by Gothamist. We are devastated that five New Yorkers lost their lives in traffic accidents over the weekend. No one should have to worry about facing death or serious injury on our streets.
