Here’s what’s next in our fight to save congestion pricing

Rally at MTA HQ

Here’s what’s next in our fight to save congestion pricing: We’re mobilizing next Wednesday outside the MTA’s headquarters with Riders Alliance to speak up in support of congestion pricing and demand the program start on June 30.

What you can do:

Rally: Join us outside MTA headquarters for a powerful demonstration in support of congestion pricing.

Action: After rallying, we'll head inside to testify to the MTA Board directly, calling on them to use what power they have to start the program as planned.

Why is this a pivotal moment? Right now, everything from cleaner air to accessible subway stations to reliable transit service is at stake.

Congestion pricing will deliver a more pedestrian-friendly, bike-accessible, and resilient New York City. Let's make our voices heard loud and clear!

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

We are experiencing our first heat wave of the year. This week is just the beginning of what promises to be a series of scorching heat waves. The urban heat island effect in New York City is exacerbating the situation, increasing temperatures by as much as 8 degrees and affecting 80% of New Yorkers. As this heat wave intensifies, the dangers of extreme heat — often underestimated but deadly — are becoming more apparent. Visit Spatial Equity NYC to explore surface temperatures across the city and understand how your neighborhood is being impacted.

Comptroller Brad Lander looks to sue over congestion pricing. The comptroller is collaborating with transit and environmental advocates to create a legal strategy to challenge Governor Hochul’s decision to reverse the congestion pricing program. We agree with Comptroller Lander: the Governor's decision could potentially be illegal.

In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:

  • Exciting news from Streetsblog! The City of New York will convert 10% of free parking to paid spots on the Upper West Side.

  • The city's 79 outdoor pools, a key cooling option for New Yorkers during the heatwave, won't open until June 27, reports Hell Gate.

  • Organized by our Queens Committee, dozens gathered in Sunnyside last week in support of congestion pricing, reports the Sunnyside Post.

TWO THINGS TO DO

Join our Bike Match program today. Our free Bike Match program connects people who have bikes to donate with those who need them. Currently, we are looking to match bikes with three people seeking asylum in New York City. If you know anyone who can donate bikes suitable for individuals who are 5'7", 5'8", or 5'11", please reach out to us. Help make a difference by participating in the Bike Match program today!

Join Us for an Evening with Anna Zivarts and Jessie Singer. Anna Zivarts will be speaking about her new book, When Driving Is Not An Option, in conversation with Jessie Singer, author of There Are No Accidents. Enjoy light snacks and drinks as you engage with these thought-provoking authors. Register today to secure your spot! Don't miss this opportunity to learn from leading voices in transit advocacy and policy.

ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW

Demand Action from Gov. Hochul: Implement congestion pricing now. Delaying congestion pricing disregards the millions of New Yorkers who rely on public transportation daily, merely to appease the program’s loudest opponents. Stalling congestion pricing will hurt New York and New Yorkers. The program must start on June 30. Please take a few minutes today and tell Governor Hochul: Don't stall congestion pricing.
