Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets Statements after Stop Super Speeders Set to Pass in Final State Budget
The Stop Super Speeders bill will require speed limiter devices on vehicles that receive 16+ speeding tickets in one year.
Vehicles with over 16 speeding violations are twice as likely to be involved in a crash that leads to a fatality or serious injury.
ALBANY, NY — Today, it was announced that the Stop Super Speeders bill, legislation that will require speed-limiter devices on vehicles that receive 16+ speeding tickets in a single year, will be included in the final state budget.
Speed limiters are a highly effective way to slow down reckless drivers. Up to 75% of drivers with a suspended license drive anyway, and a pilot study of the devices on City fleet vehicles saw a 64% reduction in speeding.
Statement from Darnell Sealy-McCrorey, a member of Families for Safe Streets:
“Speeding kills, and I am overjoyed that the Stop Super Speeders bill will pass in the state budget. As a father who lost his daughter to a speeding driver, I can finally sleep at night knowing that New York will slow down the most reckless drivers on our streets.
“Over the countless phone calls, rallies, and trips to Albany working to pass Stop Super Speeders, I’ve fought for children to have the future that was stolen from my daughter, Niyell. Niyell loved to dance, spending hours choreographing new routines, and she had dreams of becoming a doctor or lawyer. It’s so hard to accept that she’s gone, and she’ll never graduate high school or go on to college. Niyell deserved so much better, and I hope that with this bill, other children just like her will grow up to live the futures they deserve.
“I am grateful to every single member of Families for Safe Streets for their tireless advocacy, as well as our partners in government. Together we will continue the fight for safe streets, so no New Yorker has to know our unimaginable pain.”
Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:
“Today is a new dawn in New York City — and finally, we will slow down the very worst, most reckless, repeat speeders on our streets. While we’re still awaiting the final details, we know that super speeders are a threat to us all, and ensuring that some of the most dangerous drivers are finally travelling the speed limit will prevent countless crashes, injuries, and deaths.
“We want to thank every elected official who stood with us in this fight, including bill sponsors State Senator Gounardes and Assemblymember Gallagher, Assembly Speaker Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, Governor Hochul, Mayor Mamdani, and a bipartisan supermajority of the City Council, including Speaker Menin and Majority Leader and Transportation Chair Abreu. We wouldn’t be here without your support. Of course, this moment would not have been possible without the tireless advocacy of members of Families for Safe Streets and countless others. Thank you for your unending commitment to street safety.
“To every activist at TA: this is your victory. This is because you called, you emailed, you spoke out, you came to a rally, you posted on social media, and you pushed this to the top of New York’s agenda. We’re honored to organize alongside you, and we know that our work is not finished. We won’t stop fighting until everyone can travel around New York City without fear.”
