Streets Master Plan Will Transform New York City by Prioritizing People, Not Cars

Statement of Transportation Alternatives Executive Director Danny Harris in response to the New York City Council’s passage of Intro 1557 today, a bill which would require NYC DOT to issue and implement a master plan every five years:

“Today, New York City is sending a message to its residents that it values their lives more than endless traffic. The Streets Master Plan bill is not simply about bikes and buses, but about providing opportunity to 8.5 million New Yorkers by giving them dignified and safe transportation alternatives.  

As New York continues to lead the country on transformational urban design projects from congestion pricing to the 14th Street #PeopleWay to Vision Zero, this bill will replace the City’s incremental approach of improving our streets and usher in a new era where safe streets, reliable buses, and accessibility for all are the rule, not the exception.
