Statements from Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets on Governor Hochul’s State of the State Address and Policy Plan

The Stop Super Speeders legislation would require speed limiters in cars that rack up a dangerous number of speeding tickets in a year.

NEW YORK — Today, Transportation Alternatives released the following statement after Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State policy plan and address.

Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director at Transportation Alternatives

“Super speeders kill New Yorkers every year, but one tiny device can prevent these crashes before they happen.

“Thanks to the governor, we’re one step closer to ensuring a speed limiter will slow down the super speeders in New York City — saving lives for decades to come. We’re thrilled that Governor Hochul is making this a priority in the state budget, and we’re looking forward to working with her and the state legislature to get this done early this year.”

Statement from Fabiola Mendieta-Cuapio, Families for Safe Streets New York Co-Chair:

“My family and I have lived with the suffering and agony of the loss of my sweet, beautiful son Bryan since he was killed in a crash at the age of 5 in 2006. For almost twenty years, we’ve only been able to imagine what it would’ve been like to watch Bryan grow into adulthood and experience all the typical ups and downs that every New York City child should be able to take for granted.

“The Stop Super Speeders bill will slow drivers down and prevent the crashes that kill and seriously injure our fellow New Yorkers. We are incredibly grateful to Governor Hochul for her support and fighting to ensure that other families do not live the nightmare that my family and every other family in Families for Safe Streets will endure for the rest of our lives.”
