Statement from Transportation Alternatives On One-Year Anniversary of Congestion Pricing
After the implementation of congestion pricing, New York City is no longer the most congested city in the United States.
Congestion pricing has reduced traffic, improved air quality, and shortened commutes.
NEW YORK — Today, Transportation Alternatives released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the congestion pricing program.
Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:
“Today is a major milestone for New York City. One year ago, New York launched the first-in-the-nation congestion pricing program on Manhattan’s traffic-clogged streets.
“This bold plan had its naysayers, but they were all proven wrong. A year later, congestion pricing has brought safer streets, cleaner air, faster buses, more foot traffic and business, quieter streets, and billions in funding for public transportation. What was once an audacious dream is now proof of concept that bold choices rooted in the examples of other global cities can be rewarded. Let’s build on these successes by building the bus lanes, bike lanes, and world-class pedestrian space desperately needed in the congestion relief zone, and begin to study expanding the program and learning from its lessons to bring greater congestion-relief benefits to more New Yorkers.”
