Statement from Transportation Alternatives on Court Date of Miriam Yarimi, a Super Speeder Who Killed Mother and Two Daughters in Midwood, Brooklyn

The super speeder was driving on a suspended license.

Miriam Yarimi’s vehicle has accumulated more than 90 tickets, including 18 school-zone speeding tickets in 2024 alone.

Legislation up in Albany would require speed limiters in cars that receive at least 16 speeding tickets in a year. Yarimi received 18 in 2024.

Miriam Yarimi is just one of many super speeders. In New York City, cars can rack up hundreds of school-zone speeding tickets without further consequence.

Research by Transportation Alternatives has found that New York City's top 10 super speeders received over 2,700 speeding tickets combined in 2024.

BROOKLYN, NY — Today, Miriam Yarimi, a super speeder accused of killing mother Natasha Saada and her two young daughters, eight-year-old Diana and five-year-old Deborah, is scheduled to appear in court. Her four-year-old son was also hospitalized with injuries from the crash.

Yarimi was driving on a suspended license and had accumulated dozens of tickets; the Audi she was operating had more than 100 traffic violations, including at least 18 school-zone speeding tickets within a year.

There is pending legislation up in Albany — the Stop Super Speeders bill — that would require speed limiters in the cars of the worst repeat speeders. Modeled after successful anti-drunk driving legislation, this bill would install speed limiters that prevent cars from traveling more than 5 mph over the speed limit. This legislation has passed the Senate Transportation Committee and is awaiting a vote.

Transportation Alternatives’ original statement on the crash is available here, and Transportation Alternatives’ original report documenting New York City’s worst super speeders is available here.

Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:

“Natasha, Diana, and Deborah should still be here today. We cannot allow reckless drivers to rack up violations with impunity and continue endangering New Yorkers while a bill is sitting in Albany that would prevent crashes exactly like this one. New York City deserves better.

“This does not start or end with this crash. This is an epidemic much larger than any one driver, and it’s a crisis that demands systemic solutions.

“Today, this horrifying case enters the next phase in the court system. While this driver might face prison time, this family and this community will never see justice while other repeat offenders continue to terrorize New Yorkers. We can’t allow the status quo to continue. Albany must prioritize the Stop Super Speeders Bill now.”

Statement from Nina Sabghir, a Member of Families for Safe Streets:

“I was hit by a reckless driver several years ago and my son was hit less than a mile from where this family was killed. My heart breaks all over again for this family and everyone who knew and loved them. No one should have to bury their children because someone chose to drive recklessly.

“These children should be alive. Their mother should be alive. And unless Albany acts, this will happen again. We know who the worst repeat offenders are. We know how to stop them. The Stop Super Speeders bill will save lives. It’s that simple — and it needs to move forward now.”
