Statement from Transportation Alternatives After Mayor Adams Rejects DOT’s Street Safety Plan for McGuinness Boulevard

At least 150 people have been injured on McGuinness Boulevard since July 2019.

Over 10,000 people have signed the Make McGuinness Safe petition calling for a full redesign of the boulevard for safety. 

BROOKLYN, NY – After delaying the implementation of DOT’s street safety plan for McGuinness Boulevard for a year, Mayor Adams today broke his promise to remove two car and truck travel lanes from the Greenpoint road.  

Statement from Elizabeth Adams, Interim Co-Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:

“Mayor Adams has once again put politics ahead of people on McGuinness Boulevard by siding with special interests to reject his own Department of Transportation’s plan to make McGuinness safe.”

“For years, Greenpointers have demanded our city’s leaders put an end to the deadly status quo on McGuinness Boulevard. An evidence-driven plan from DOT was finally set for installation last year — before Mayor Adams and powerful wealthy interests delayed it at the last minute.”

“With school starting soon, children deserve a safe McGuinness Boulevard — not a Robert Moses highway masquerading as a neighborhood street. That’s why DOT advanced a plan to reduce truck and car traffic and give pedestrians and bike riders more space.”

“Now, Mayor Adams wants to copy-and-paste the blocked bike lanes, speeding traffic, and dangerous intersections from the northern portion of McGuinness to the southern instead of giving Greenpoint a truly safe street.”

“From McGuiness to Fordham Road to Bedford Avenue, it’s clear that Mayor Adams has no interest in keeping people safe from traffic violence even during a particularly deadly year. We will continue to fight for a full, comprehensive street safety redesign on McGuinness Boulevard.”
