Take Action: Safe Speed Limits on the Chopping Block
Right now, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie is refusing to hold a vote on Sammy’s Law. The session in Albany ends in one week and legislators are intentionally waiting out the clock — putting politics over people’s lives.
Today, legislators from cities and towns hundreds of miles away from New York City decide the speed limits on our roads. It's unsafe and it's unfair. Sammy's Law would give New Yorkers local control of our speed limits.
Can you call Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie at 518-455-3791 today and demand a vote on Sammy’s Law?
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
Congestion pricing is good for street safety. Vehicular crashes dropped by 35% and fatal car crashes dropped by 27% in London’s congestion pricing zone, and areas outside the CPZ saw additional reductions in crashes. We need to implement congestion pricing in New York City without further delays.
We’re fighting for the entire SAFE Streets Act. We went to Albany last week to urge our state lawmakers to pass the full SAFE Streets Act, a package of six lifesaving bills to address our state’s traffic violence crisis. Send a message to your lawmakers in support now.
In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:

Read the New York Post’s coverage of Sammy’s Law and why New York City needs control over its speed limits.
