July 6: Bike Match, Congestion Pricing, Supersized Vehicles

Rally for the McGuinness Boulevard redesign. Streetsblog recently reported that Mayor Adams ordered a reversal on previous DOT plans to redesign McGuinness Boulevard for safety. The DOT redesign was created following a two-year-long process with community input and dozens of public meetings.

Join us at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, at City Hall for a rally in support of the full McGuinness Boulevard street safety redesign.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: The bike boom is here to stay!

Total daily cycling trips, bicycle commuting to work, and adults biking regularly all reached record highs in 2022.

East River bridge crossings were the highest in 2022, about doubled from 2008.

And our free Bike Match program has officially connected 500 New Yorkers to bikes since the program began in 2020, with 2,664 participants from 182 ZIP codes.

We’ve averaged a match every 2.4 days since March 2020!

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

Congestion pricing funds our city’s transit future. This week, the MTA awarded the first contract for the Second Avenue Subway extension into East Harlem after the federal government officially approved congestion pricing. This project, like so many signal upgrades and accessibility improvements, is possible because of congestion pricing.

Bicycle Film Festival invites you to the New York premiere of The Engine Inside. The new documentary feature film tells the stories of six everyday people from all over the globe, who reveal the unique power of the bicycle to change lives and build a better world. Get tickets for screenings in Tribeca on Wednesday, July 12.

In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:

  • How can the US make streets safe for pedestrians? Listen to TA’s Philip Miatkowski on Freakonomics.

  • Time Out shares five ways congestion pricing will improve how you get around New York City.

  • Big news for East Harlem: The Second Avenue Subway is moving along (thanks to, you guessed it, congestion pricing). See the station renderings in Gothamist.

TWO THINGS TO DO

Rally with Riders Alliance for better buses on Fordham Road. Join our friends at Riders Alliance at 11 a.m. on July 11 at Fordham Plaza to rally with Council Member Pierina Sanchez to call on Mayor Adams to stand up for riders and deliver a new busway on Fordham Road.

Our annual street safety conference is back. Sign up today for Vision Zero Cities,, taking place from Oct. 18 - 20, at New York University, in partnership with the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management at NYU Wagner. Expect dynamic programming with keynote speakers, field tours, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities with like-minded professionals.

ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW

Sign our Boston Road petition. With wide lanes, long crosswalks, diagonal intersections, lack of bus lanes and bike lanes, Boston Road currently fails to serve the needs of most residents in the area. We need a redesign of Boston Road that can safely accommodate all users of the corridor.
