We are deeply concerned about the proposed 5 Bridges Project, which would spend $900 million tax dollars to widen the Cross Bronx Expressway and create a new elevated roadway over the Bronx River.
This project will widen the Cross Bronx and construct nearly a mile of new highway. The majority of households in the Bronx are car free, and the State's top-down, car-centric urban planning continues to ignore the needs of Bronx residents, particularly residents of color.
We urge Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) to do the following:
Remove the so-called elevated “connector” highway from the project. This is unnecessary for repairing the bridges along the highway, and expanding the highway will leave a permanent, negative impact on the area.
Prepare a full environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project.
The Cross Bronx has dumped unwelcome noise, air, and water pollution into the borough for decades. The Robert Moses-era highway is arguably the most notorious and harmful example of racist urban planning in the country, and these harms must be lessened, not exacerbated.
By planning with the community, and embracing modern, comprehensive land use and transportation planning methods, NYS DOT can demonstrate a true commitment to repairing its legacy, and serving the people and ecology of the Bronx.
