Connect & Protect Ashland & Navy

We support protected bike lanes on Ashland and Navy, from Atlantic Terminal up to Flushing Avenue, which is currently a critical missing link in Brooklyn's protected bike network.

This infrastructure would tie together the 4th Avenue and Flushing Avenue protected bike lanes, connecting Prospect Heights and Fort Greene to the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Navy Yard, and beyond.

The project would benefit all road users. Installing protected bike infrastructure leads to a 21% drop in pedestrian injuries, and a nearly 40% drop in serious injuries for seniors. The proposed infrastructure would also fill in missing pedestrian access along Navy Street, and bring traffic calming and livability benefits to a street that encourages reckless driving.

As frequent users of the street, including residents of the immediate area and beyond, we strongly support DOT's proposal and ask for:

  • A timely and full implementation of the proposed project, connecting Atlantic Terminal to Flushing Ave with fully protected bike lanes

  • Robust protections to prevent cars and trucks from entering and obstructing the protected lane, including the use of concrete jersey barriers or metal bollards

  • Additional traffic calming measures to prevent dangerous speeding down this corridor

These changes will make the Ashland and Navy corridor safer for pedestrians, bike riders, as well as drivers.

Mayor Eric Adams, Council Member Crystal Hudson, DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, DOT Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Keith Bray and Brooklyn Community Board 2 leaders, we urge the full and expedited implementation of this critical segment of Brooklyn's protected bicycle network.
