On the Ground with E-Bikes Workshop + Walking Tour
Location: NYU Kimmel Center Room 907
60 Washington Square SCities are strategizing on how to integrate e-bikes into their transportation networks—balancing safety, equity, and economic realities. This field tour begins with a roundtable on the policy landscape: what tools cities have to regulate e-bikes fairly, how to ensure safety without criminalizing riders, and where infrastructure can support both delivery workers and the public good. Participants will then visit a Popwheels battery-swapping station to observe how delivery workers access fresh batteries between trips. Seeing this infrastructure in action highlights the people impacted by policy decisions and will spark discussion about how cities can design systems that work for everyone.

Palettes of a Public Realm Renaissance: Lessons from an Incremental Revolution Above 14th Street
Location: Time Out Market Union Square
Manhattan’s streets have undergone a remarkable transformation in the past two decades. This walking tour will explore how the continued reclamation of space for pedestrians and transit riders, from the 14th Street Busway to Union Square, the Broadway Vision, up to Herald Square and 34th Street has reshaped New York City’s streetscape in one of the densest neighborhoods in the nation. These changes didn’t happen overnight. They emerged through years of collaboration among community partners, city agencies, and advocates working across multiple administrations to advance a new vision for Manhattan’s public realm.
Together, we’ll trace a history and topography of car-free busways, bustling markets, outdoor dining zones, and shared pedestrian plazas. While transformative, these improvements were incremental and remain an ongoing, people-centered evolution. This walk invites reflection on the lessons learned from this collaborative renaissance unfolding across Manhattan’s most vibrant blocks as we enter a new era for New York City's streets.
