Statement from Transportation Alternatives on City Hall’s Proposal to Regulate Delivery Apps

Today’s announcement comes after TA’s yearslong fight for delivery app regulation.

Delivery work is the most dangerous job in New York City.

Regulations that prevent corporations from profiting off unsafe working conditions can protect all New Yorkers.

NEW YORK — Today, Transportation Alternatives released the following statement after City Hall announced movement to regulate the same-day delivery app industry.

Today’s announcement comes after TA strongly advocated for app regulation in last year’s Delivering Safety: A Regulatory Framework to Rein in the Destructive Practices of Same-Day Delivery App Companies for Calm Streets and Just Working Conditions report.

Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director at Transportation Alternatives:

“New Yorkers have been clamoring for a comprehensive approach to safe and professionalized delivery work that keeps cyclists and pedestrians safe – and at TA, we’ve been putting forward proactive, comprehensive solutions. The same-day app delivery industry is in a race to the bottom where the main winners are a couple of Silicon Valley CEOs, and it’s past time to seriously regulate the industry. All delivery workers on our roads deserve safe and dignified working conditions — whether they’re delivering a package, a passenger, or a pizza — and all New Yorkers deserve safe and pleasant streets and sidewalks.”

“We’re excited to see our efforts come to fruition through this new proposal. We look forward to reviewing the details, and hope to see the City Council call a hearing soon to advance this new legislation.”
