Statement from Transportation Alternatives After the Mayoral Primary Election Results
Transportation Alternatives hosted a mayoral forum earlier this year to hear directly from the candidates on their plans for better transit and safer streets.
NEW YORK — After yesterday’s mayoral primary, both major parties in New York City have chosen their candidates for mayor.
Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:
“Congratulations to all of last night’s winners! 2026 presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape our streets and create a city where everyone can get around quickly, safely, and affordably, and with dignity — whether you’re walking, biking, or taking the bus.
“New York City has the opportunity to follow the examples of other great global cities, and become a shining model for the rest of the U.S. There could soon be a new mayoral administration, and the bold visions for our streets that candidates laid out at our forum in February will become possible. We can shape a city that is better for everyone biking to work, walking a child to school, waiting for a bus on a hot day, or delivering goods on a cargo bike.
“We’re looking forward to building a new New York City with you, together. If we imagine it and we fight for it, we can win a city that lives up to its potential, so that the greatest city in the world has the greatest streets in the world.”
