“Speaker Adams Is Ignoring the Most Prominent Street Safety Bill of Her Four-year Term”: Joint Statement from TA and Open Plans on Speaker Adams Removing Daylighting Bill from Final Council Meeting
Intro 1138, the universal daylighting bill which would bring safer intersections to New York City, is co-sponsored by 27 Council Members and the Public Advocate.
NEW YORK — With one day left before bills are finalized for the final Council Stated meeting, Speaker Adams has removed Intro 1138 from the Council list for a vote. Removing the bill from the voting list means universal daylighting won’t get a vote in the City Council this year.
Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, and Sara Lind, co-Executive Director of Open Plans:
“Since Adrienne Adams began her term as Speaker of the City Council, 50 children have been killed in traffic in New York City. Hundreds more people have been killed, and thousands more have been seriously injured. This calls for leadership — yet New Yorkers have seen delay and inaction. Instead of working to save lives, Speaker Adams is ignoring the most prominent street safety bill of her four-year term and leaving a legacy of unsafe streets, blocked intersections, and tragedy. Speaker Adams: move the bill now. The countless New Yorkers who have lost loved ones and are calling for safer streets deserve a vote on this bill. Don’t let daylighting die in darkness.”
