“Donald Trump Wants Your Bus to be Stuck in Traffic”; Statement from Transportation Alternatives After Trump Administration Tries to Block 34th Street Busway

Buses along 34th Street average just 5.5 mph for 28,000 daily riders. The M34 is the third-slowest bus in New York City; a single crosstown trip takes around 22 minutes.

The 34th Street Busway was approved by the City Council in August, as part of the Midtown South Mixed-Use Plan (MSMX).

The 34th Busway has support from every elected official who represents the street and all three Community Boards.

NEW YORK — Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation called for an immediate halt of the New York City Department of Transportation’s planned 34th Street Busway, threatening to withhold federal funding unless NYC stops work on the project.

“Donald Trump wants your bus to be stuck in traffic,” said Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. “New Yorkers are riding the slowest buses in the nation, and the president wants to stop any improvements in the lives of the working people of this city. Trump tried to illegally steal millions in anti-terrorism funding, he’s trying to steal $18 billion meant for mass transit projects, and now he’s trying to meddle in an already-approved bus improvement project that will help New Yorkers stuck in traffic on their way to work. Trump is hell-bent on punishing New Yorkers, but we won’t let him ruin our city. Thank you to Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul for standing strong and pushing back against yet another Trump administration attack on New Yorkers.”
