August 2: Summer Streets Ride, NYPD Ticketing Dashboard, E-Micromobility

Bikers riding down Manhattan Summer Streets

Summer Streets officially kicked off in Queens and Staten Island last weekend! On Saturdays through the end of August, miles of our streets will be open to people.

Join us for our second annual Summer Streets ride this Saturday. Meet up with us at 9 a.m. at 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell and ride down to the Brooklyn Bridge. We'll highlight our campaigns along the way, stopping at a few key locations. Get plugged into some of our ongoing campaigns and enjoy the views with the TA team. Trust us, you don't want to miss out!

Summer Streets provides car-free space to walk, jog, skate, play, and more. DOT expanded Summer Streets into all five boroughs this year, so make sure to check out all the new car-free space this weekend.

By transforming public space devoted to cars into space for people, we can create a more diverse and equitable city that aligns with our NYC 25X25 vision. Let's make Summer Streets a reality all year around.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

We examined NYPD's unequal enforcement of bicycling on sidewalks. NYPD overwhelmingly ticketed New Yorkers of color for bicycle citations and 90% of tickets were issued on streets without a separated or protected bike lane. Unequal access to life-saving infrastructure upgrades like protected bike lanes further exacerbates inequality rates in our city.

E-bikes are popular now more than ever. It’s time our city leaders embrace new, sustainable forms of transportation. Creating accessible infrastructure for e-bikes and e-scooters will reduce traffic violence, pollution, and emissions while protecting New York’s most vulnerable. Lack of intergenerational mobility only exacerbates inequality further. Affordable, efficient, and safe e-micromobility creates a more equitable city.

In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:

  • Streetsblog reports on the updated McGuinness Boulevard redesign. We won’t stop fighting for a street that puts people first.

  • Spectrum News 1 covers a new state bill proposing speed limiters for repeat offenders with multiple speed-camera violations.

  • Route Fifty explores the intersection between public art and street safety. Read more about how colorful curbs can create safer intersections.
