May 6: Safe streets rally in Albany, Bike Month, bigger cars

Dear Friend,

Our movement to pass the Crash Victim Rights and Safety Act is growing stronger. This week, nearly 100 people rallied with us in Albany to call on our state lawmakers to address the crisis of traffic violence on streets across the state.

As New York City faces the possibility of a fourth consecutive year of rising traffic fatalities, we need all the tools we can to turn the tide and restore the promise of Vision Zero. From street redesigns to lower speed limits to home rule over automated traffic safety, our leaders cannot wait.

HELP PASS THE CVRSA

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

1️⃣ As cars get bigger, more people die in crashes. Each year, automakers build bigger vehicles. Taller front-ends increase the likelihood of head or chest impact for pedestrians. Plus, more power required to move larger vehicles leads to a harder strike. The federal government is seeking public comment for its New Car Assessment Program until the beginning of June — tell them to consider the impact to people outside the car in safety ratings.

2️⃣ We’re growing, and want you to join us. Help make New York City the best place to walk, bike, and take transit. We’re hiring an Email Production AssociateLegislative ManagerFamilies for Safe Streets DirectorSchools OrganizerField Team Coordinator, and Bike Valet staff.

3️⃣ In the news. Here’s what we’re reading this week:

  • space minus cars equals quality of life. The Guardian took a look at how NYC 25x25 would reshape car-dominated space into streets for people.

  • Watch: Senator Andrew Gounardes spoke with Albany’s WRGB about the need to pass the CVRSA. Plus, the Kingston Common Council passed a resolution in support of the CVRSA.

  • The Bronx’s e-scooter pilot is moving into Phase II. Watch a News 12 report on how the pilot shows the demand for micromobility options and investments in protected bike lanes.

  • Citi Bike is rolling out its newest e-bike model. Streetsblog took a first look.

TWO THINGS TO DO

1️⃣ Stop by our Bike Month commuter stations next week. Next Wednesday and Thursday, find us at locations across the five boroughs as our commuter stations return. We’ll have bike gear, snacks, swag, and more from TA and our Bike Month sponsors. Then, RSVP for our free CYCLEBRATION! party — a celebration of biking on May 20 at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

2️⃣ The Comptroller’s office wants to hear about the quality of sanitation services in your neighborhood. Please fill out this quick survey about your experience with trash collection and street cleanliness. Remember: Our sidewalks don’t have to be trash cans.

ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW

Register for Bike Month. It’s not too late to register for our Bike Month challenge as an individual or with a team. We’ve got great prizes for the participants and workplaces that rack up the most miles this month.

Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend,
Jacob and the TA team
