May 20: Help strengthen speed safety cameras, CYCLEBRATION!, NYC Marathon

There are less than 10 days left in the state legislative session and time’s running out for lawmakers to lift the limits on where and when New York City’s life-saving speed safety camera program can operate.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Sign the petition: Add your name to this petition. We’ll send the message to Governor Hochul, Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and your state legislators, asking them to support 24/7 speed safety cameras.

  2. Make phone calls: Call Governor Hochul (518-474-8390), Speaker Heastie (518-455-3791), Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins (518-455-2715) and tell them you want 24/7 speed safety cameras. Here's what you can say, “I want New York City’s streets protected from speeding drivers every hour, every day. Please reauthorize the speed safety camera program without restrictions on times and days of operation.”

As THE CITY reported this week, speeding is surging overnight and on weekends. Speeding doesn’t sleep, and neither should speed safety cameras. Sign our petition, make phone calls, and share our urgent action on Twitter.

TAKE ACTION NOW

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

NYC’s first bus lane opened 59 years ago today. On this date in 1963, bus lanes opened on Livingston Street in Brooklyn and Victory Boulevard in Staten Island. Yet nearly six decades later, less than 1 percent of our streets are dedicated to moving millions of bus riders. With NYC 25x25, every New Yorker can live within a quarter-mile of a bus lane.

Three CVRSA bills passed the State Senate this week! The momentum behind passing the Crash Victim Rights and Safety Act continues as the State Senate passed three measures to protect people on our streets. Learn more about the CVRSA and take action today.

In the news. Here’s what we’re reading this week:

  • New York’s leaders must do everything they can to protect older New Yorkers, AARP NY State Director Beth Finkel and TA Executive Director Danny Harris write in a new Gotham Gazette op-ed.

  • In the Albany Times-Union, two Albany elected officials penned a powerful op-ed in support of the Crash Victim Rights and Safety Act.

  • Watch: TA's Danny Harris and Families for Safe Streets member Jane Martin-Lavaud joined NY1’s In Focus to talk about our work this year to make streets safe.

ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW

Tell your lawmaker and tell them to lift the limits on speed safety cameras. Speeding doesn’t sleep, and neither should our speed safety cameras. New Yorkers deserve to be protected from speeding drivers 24/7. Sign our petition and tell your New York State legislators to remove the restrictions on speed safety cameras today!

Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend,
Jacob and the TA team
