E-Bike Batteries, Daylighting, Jobs At TA
After a weekend of traffic violence that led to two fatalities and two critical injuries, we’re again calling for daylighting at all intersections.
New York State bans car parking near intersections, but New York City overrides this law. As our new video shows, putting cars this close to the crosswalk prevents drivers and pedestrians alike from crossing the intersection safely.
A practice known as daylighting, which removes the parking spots closest to an intersection to increase visibility, can get us closer to achieving the goals of Vision Zero. Watch our video to see what we can do to make New York City’s 39,000+ intersections safer, and while you’re there, sign our petition to get Vision Zero back on track.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW
1️⃣ What we can build with reclaimed street space. By removing parking spaces close to intersections, not only do we improve visibility and make streets safer to cross, we also gain street space that we can put to use for people. In NYC 25x25, we show how this space can be repurposed to build rain gardens, plant trees, install bike racks, and provide public seating.
2️⃣ Safer batteries stop e-bike fires. In an op-ed for Streetsblog, written with Los Deliveristas Unidos, we called for implementing safer battery standards and education programs, while also advocating for dedicated charging stations and an e-bike rebate program.
3️⃣ In the news. Here's what we're reading this week:
Check out coverage of last weekend’s BQE Central Walk & Talk from News 12 Brooklyn and NY 1.
Bicycling Magazine tells the story of Maya Pedal, a non-profit in San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala that builds machines powered by bicycles.
Learn about the proposed new layout of pedestrian walkways and bike lanes in Gothamist’s article about the repaving of the Prospect Park road loop.
TWO THINGS TO DO
1️⃣ Join our team! We’re hiring for full-time and seasonal roles, and you can read all about them on our Careers page. Support our advocacy team and apply to be our next Field Team Coordinator, or help our Bike Valet program as a Team Lead or as an Ambassador.
2️⃣ Register for the Women's Ride on March 25. We’ve created a new, nine-mile route for all riders to tour the Bronx and Uptown Manhattan. Get a look at the route on our event page and sign up today!
ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW
Help us reimagine the BQE. Council District 33 is home to the triple-cantilever section of the BQE that runs alongside Brooklyn Bridge Park. It has the fifth-highest amount of air pollution in the city, and the most in Brooklyn, according to Spatial Equity NYC. Read our Twitter thread from last weekend’s walk to see more about how we can plan for a safer, healthier future. We’ll also be hosting our third and final BQE Walk & Talk next Saturday, exploring the section from Gowanus to Sunset Park.
