Celebrate Bike Month with Transportation Alternatives
Dear Friend,
We’re celebrating all month long with giveaways, rides, and more — be sure to mark your calendars for our commuter stations across New York City. We’ll be handing out snacks, refreshments, swag, and more in all five boroughs on May 16 and 17.
Last weekend, our Brooklyn Activist Committee kicked us off with a community ride in East New York alongside DOT, DOH, East Brooklyn Bike Club, East New York Restoration LDC, East New York Farms, and other local partners.
During the ride, we highlighted the new protected bike lanes on Cozine and Wortman Avenues that have led to 55% fewer crashes in the first four months of 2024 compared to the first four months of 2023.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
We rallied in Albany for the passage of the SAFE Streets Package. On Tuesday, Families for Safe Streets and TA joined with state lawmakers to call for passage of essential bills to make streets safe across the state. This includes a bill to mandate intelligent speed assistance on repeat speeders’ cars to prevent reckless driving. Learn more about how you can support the package.
TA’s Manhattan campaigns were central to DOT’s plan to increase access to the future congestion pricing zone. Last week, the city announced plans to build a new protected bike lane on 72nd Street, expand the Broadway redesign, improve safety on Canal Street, and more — building on years-long campaigns from our Manhattan committee, supported by community members like you. Tell Gov. Hochul and the MTA: Get ready for congestion pricing. With fewer than two months to go until the program starts, we need the MTA to prepare our streets by converting car lanes on MTA bridges to bus lanes, enabling all-door boarding on buses to speed them up, and more.
