With bicycle baskets built to hold your laptop and bicycling pants you could pass off in the boardroom, the New Amsterdam Bike Show is not your typical bike show. In the 21,000 square foot showroom at Skylight Soho, the selection is curated for urban bike commuters like you. Try out a hand-painted helmet or a bicycle built of bamboo. Dutch brewers Grolsch will pour pints, and you can leave your lock at home because T.A. Bike Valet will be on the scene. Even better: Your ticket boosts bicycling in NYC. The New Amsterdam Bike Show is a benefit for Transportation Alternatives. Proceeds will help T.A. win bike lanes in more neighborhoods, and all attendees will get a discount on admission or a free one-year T.A. membership, depending if they’re new or not. Online ticket sales close at 4 pm today, but tickets will still be available at the door.

What do you call it when hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers don't give up their parking spaces or pay for the MTA, and enjoy the idyllic rivers and bridges between their home and office? You could call it any given day in spring. But on Bike to Work Day, it is a bicycling holiday. T.A. will be staffing every East River bridge, the Staten Island Ferry and a critical commuter path on the Upper West Side with iced coffee, Clif Bars and fresh fruit for breakfast. This year, we recommend you celebrate Bike to Work Day by bringing a friend or co-worker along for the ride. Most T.A. members renew their membership on Bike to Work Day, because for one day only, a nifty set of T.A.-branded bike lights are our gift to renewing members. Find T.A. on Bike to Work Day.

Sure, Jane Jacobs rode a bicycle. But a more important factoid about the famous urban philosopher was that she understood walkable streets make better neighbors. These days, streets that Jane Jacobs would endorse are cropping up in all corners of the city. Like in Jackson Heights, where two new pedestrian plazas are jam-packed with local residents, or at Harlem River Park, where safer streets made that public space more accessible. A redesigned street can be a community-builder and a neighborhood-maker. Jane Jacobs understood that, and since 1973, T.A. has been applying her philosophy to New York City neighborhoods. We're hosting a series of strolls and talking about how to build better streets. Join us for a series of public walking tours on New York City’s best new blocks and most innovative avenues.

Epicures should be in attendance, because these bike-friendly businesses are best tried by tasting. T.A.'s tour will begin in the East Village, with lemonade and perogies. It'll end in a Brooklyn park, with barbeque. Along the way, gourmet coffee will keep you pedaling. At every stop on T.A.'s Bike Friendly Business Tour, you'll support businesses that support bicycling. With safe streets shown to boost retail sales as much as 25 percent, more and more businesses are realizing it pays to be bike friendly. That's why T.A. has no shortage of savvy businesses who've signed onto our Bike Friendly Business program. Join T.A. for an easy five-mile ride, with complimentary food and drinks. Hit up these retailers while you're bicycling, during Bike Month and all year long, and it'll be good for your wallet too.

From Staten Island’s critical role housing British forces in the Revolutionary War, to its potent efforts to secede from borough-dom in the two last decades, Staten Island residents know their history is a hands-on affair. On the Tour de Staten Island, you can dive into that antiquity with two wheels. The 21.5-mile self-guided tour begins and ends at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home of the Staten Island Yankees. Take a break in Historic Richmondtown, a preserved colonial village in the center of Staten Island. Be sure to check out the Alice Austen House (home to America’s first major female photographer), and the 300-year-old Fort Wadsworth (home to those warring Brits). The South Beach Boardwalk and New York Bay make for impressive scenery along the route. After the ride, stay at the stadium for pizza and Staten Island's best high school ballplayers. Registration is limited for this historic tour, and it opens today. Reserve your spot on the Tour de Staten Island now.

The Tour de Brooklyn, T.A.'s 20-mile tour of diverse Brooklyn neighborhoods, has undergone a radical redesign for its eighth year. Now, with two waves of riders and a Bike Bonanza for the youngest set, the Tour de Brooklyn has an option for everyone. Here's how it'll work: advanced and intermediate riders will depart in Wave One, bicycling at their own pace. Wave Two departs second, so novice riders and children can enjoy an NYPD-escorted parade through Brooklyn. The Bike Bonanza is a festival on two wheels, with Bike New York teaching kids to ride, Recycle-A-Bike on hand to swap out worn down children's bicycles and the New York City Department of Transportation offering free helmets to youth. For now, we can only hint at the surprise addition to this year's tour: exclusive access to a heavily-guarded Brooklyn historical site. Stay tuned to the StreetBeat for the big reveal when registration opens May 10th.

This summer, a public bike share system is going to launch in New York City. When it arrives, bicycling will be a permanent part of the streetscape. As of today, T.A. is making the event-filled fun of Bike Month permanent too: With our new events platform, BikeNYC.org, you can find fun ways to connect with other bicycling New Yorkers all year long.
