To kick off the 9th Annual Bike Month celebration in New York City, Transportation Alternatives is launching http://BikeNYC.org, the year-round, go-to source for all things bicycling in New York City. Powered by a rotating Board of Curators and local bike event organizers, BikeNYC.org features an open-source, events calendar, daily bike-related deals and bike riding tips.

"In 1990, New York City celebrated the first-ever Bike Day. Before long, Bike Day evolved into Bike Week and then, Bike Month. Now, with the launch of BikeNYC.org, we recognize that bicycling is a year-round fact of life for New York City," said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "To serve the growing number of daily bike commuters, Transportation Alternatives is proud to offer BikeNYC.org," White continued. "BikeNYC.org is where to go before your roll to ensure you're making the most of biking in the Big Apple."

Bike Month offers rides, workshops, races and events, all of which can be found on BikeNYC.org. BikeNYC.org's user friendly, open-source calendar allows anyone to post their bike rides and other bicycling events directly onto the website year-round. Thanks to BikeNYC.org, every month is Bike Month from now on.

"Biking has long been a part of the culture here at Flavorpill and we're proud to support BikeNYC.org's efforts to bring biking events to more and more New Yorkers," said Sascha Lewis, CEO and co-founder of Flavorpill. "Flavorpill is very enthusiastic about how biking, particularly in major cities, has become increasingly a cultural and global phenomenon and we're looking forward to encouraging our community to get out on their bikes during Bike Month and on National Bike to Work Day."

Beyond the year-long events calendar, BikeNYC.org also features daily bike-related deals, riding tips and periodic live "Question & Answer" sessions, hosted by New York's bicycling experts. These sessions will cover everything from fixing a flat to bike share tips. The daily deals will be pulled from Transportation Alternatives' Bike Friendly Business campaign, which highlights businesses who support bicycling and customers who arrive by bike. BikeNYC.org will foster online community building through Twitter by prominently incorporating the #bikenyc hashtag.

The centerpiece of Bike Month is National Bike To Work Day on May 18th, an opportunity for casual bicyclists to try bike commuting and discover the benefits of bicycling for transportation. Transportation Alternatives will be hosting bike commuter rest stops at every East River bridge, the Staten Island Ferry and the Upper West Side to celebrate those who choose city-friendly two wheeled transportation on May 18th.

New York City has a long history of bicycling; the first bike path in America opened in Brooklyn in 1894. Thanks to the City's commitment to creating safe space on our streets for bicycling in recent years, more New Yorkers are riding bikes than ever before. On any given day, over 200,000 people are bicycling around New York City. Half a million New Yorkers bicycle at least a few times a month. This year, bicycling in the Big Apple takes a huge step forward with the launch of NYC Bike Share. With 10,000 bicycles distributed at 600 stations, New York's public bike share program will be the largest bicycle sharing system in the Western Hemisphere.

"Soon, countless New Yorkers will experience bicycling for the first time thanks to the launch of the largest bike share program in the nation," said White. "With BikeNYC.org, Transportation Alternatives stands ready to connect them to the wider world of bicycling in the Big Apple."
