Campaign History
The Grand Concourse is one of the longest, widest and terrifying streets in the Bronx. The street’s dangerous conditions encourage speeding, and unsafe interactions between the different modes of transportation, putting thousands of daily Bronxites at risk. Since July 2012, over 1,069 people were injured and 13 were killed due to the dangerous conditions along the Concourse.
Complete the Concourse is a local effort, being led by T.A.’s Bronx Activist Committee, to bring a Complete Street to the Grand Concourse. A “Complete Street” will bring life-saving improvements to the entire Concourse with traffic calming measures, protected bike lanes, curb extensions, and dedicated bus lanes.
Pedestrian safety improvements, protected bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes:
- Reduce crashes for everyone on the street by up to 58 percent
- Reduce sidewalk riding by up to 84 percent
- Increase retail sales up to 49 percent
