Streets are for people
We can reclaim our streets
Transportation Alternatives’ mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and advocate for better bicycling, walking, and public transit for all New Yorkers.
Streets and sidewalks are 80% of our public space in New York City – but right now, our lives are polluted, congested, and endangered by car and truck traffic. Transportation Alternatives believes that this public space belongs to the people of New York City, and we are working with New Yorkers in every borough to reclaim our streets. Act Now
Since the 1970s, Transportation Alternatives has been leading the movement for biking and walking in New York City. We have reclaimed acres of New York City from the legacy of Robert Moses, with the construction of over 1,000 miles of bike lanes and over 70 public plazas on New York City streets. We brought the first public bike share system, the first protected bike lanes, the first automated speed and red light enforcement cameras systems, and the first Vision Zero initiative to New York City, and the United States.
You can find the 40+ year impact of Transportation Alternatives on streets across the Big Apple. But we are not done yet, and we need your help. Learn More
Over 1000 miles of bike lanes
“Transportation Alternatives brings together a lot of cool people who are involved in their community in different ways, not just biking and walking.”
