Cause One in Four People to Crash & Must Be Removed
Today, Transportation Alternatives (T.A.) released the report “A Bridge To Scar” showing that the 26 two-inch high metal bumps, which cover expansion joints and span the width of the bridge’s biking and walking path, pose serious danger to bridge users. The survey results are available on-line at transalt.org. Transportation Alternatives is calling on the City of New York to remove the dangerous bumps. On the morning of December 2nd, Transportation Alternatives staff and volunteers will christen the new bike lanes on Clinton Street and Tillary Street in Downtown Brooklyn with a Give Respect/Get Respect outreach event aimed at drivers and bike riders. On Wednesday afternoon elected officials, members of Community Board 2, residents from along Houston Street and impassioned cyclists will gather to call for safe cycling on Houston Street and urge the City to meet with them and figure out how to include protected space for cyclists in its plans to reconstruct the arterial. Manhattan Borough President Stringer, State Senator Connor, Assemblymember Glick and Councilmember Gerson are expected to attend.

Dozens of local bicyclists celebrated Queens' new 20th Avenue bike lanes at a free breakfast for bike commuters on Thursday, November 9th. Transportation Alternatives (T.A.), a group that promotes biking, walking and sensible transportation, organized the breakfast at Woodtree Playground in Astoria/Steinway to thank the NYC Department of Transportation for recently installing the new bike lanes and to urge locals to consider commuting by bicycle.
