On Thursday morning, the Department of Transportation will be meeting with community members and local businesses in Community Board District 1 to discuss the proposed bike lane extension along Greenpoint Avenue and across the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge. This is an issue playing out in your back yard, and we are writing to encourage you to attend this important meeting to speak about the importance of bicycle lanes. Streets with bike lanes see 40% fewer crashes for all street users, including drivers and pedestrians. Bike lanes are necessary safety improvements for bicyclists, like sidewalks are for pedestrians. Greenpoint Avenue is a truck route and bicycle lanes provide bicyclists with dedicated space for safe travel. Please attend this meeting and speak up for safe bicycling conditions across the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge!
Business are concerned that the lane will snarl traffic and create unfavorable economic conditions, but this bike lane will not negatively impact the street -- just the opposite, in fact. On streets that receive bike lanes, the same volume of traffic is maintained while the safety of everyone is improved.
Can't attend the meeting in person? Send a message of support for the proposed Greenpoint Avenue bike lane to the Community Board. These decision-makers need to hear from residents who care about safety for all street users.
