Recently, 100 parents and children marched to Mayor Bloomberg’s campaign headquarters to demand he install traffic safety zones around all schools in the Bronx, including 15 mph zones on small streets around schools. The coalition held a funeral procession with a coffin representing children killed and injured walking to and from school. But the mayor’s office declined to accept a petition with 25,000 signatures of support from Bronx residents If you caught the protest on the news, you may have stopped for a second to think, “Why wouldn’t the city create safety zones around schools?” You wouldn’t be the first. Not only has the Community Collaborative to Improve Bronx Schools, a coalition of parents, schools and community groups who work together to win educational justice in Bronx schools, have gotten 25,000 signatures in support of the campaign, it also secured the support of Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion and other elected officials. The coalition's plan calls for common sense measures like speed humps on small streets and more time to street-crossing time. Despite the wide support for the proposal, the city’s Department of Transportation has only offered a watered down test of one part of the coalition’s proposal. And when asked about traffic safety around schools, the agency has said it has done enough. Do you agree?
