Statement from Paul Steely White on Midtown Taxi Crash
Earlier today, a reckless taxi driver plowed into a crowded sidewalk near Rockefeller Center, striking a cyclist and seriously injuring a 23 year old British tourist, who sadly ended up losing her leg.
This kind of abhorrent behavior must not be tolerated and I call on Commissioner Yassky to immediately revoke the drivers ability to operate a cab in New York City. Eyewitness accounts already suggest the driver acted recklessly and we expect the NYPD to fully investigate and file appropriate charges.
This crash occurred at one of the busiest areas in Manhattan, a top tourist destination and where tens of thousands of New Yorkers go to work every day. It is imperative for the city to do everything in its power to ensure that 6th Avenue is as safe as it can be, with protected space for walkers and bikers alike. Our thoughts are with the victim of this horrible crash, and T.A. will be there every step of the way to ensure this doesn't happen again.
