Like the first robin and the first pitch, it's an annual sign of springtime in the city - bicyclists gripping their handlebars - and their first traffic ticket.

But that wasn't the case as much this year, advocacy groups say. Bike riders and their blue-clad foes at the NYPD are apparently sharing fewer summonses in 2008 - and that's nothing to soft-pedal.

According to Transportation Alternatives, tickets issued to cyclists last year were down 19% from 2006. Anecdotal evidence suggested the figures were dropping again this year, advocates say.

It wasn't a pretty picture: ill-fitting jeans, a tucked-in golf shirt, black-and-white socks and a helmet that could make Michael Dukakis blush.

"Please tell me he isn't wearing dark socks," commented one of many Internet fashionistas who weighed in on Obama's recent ride along Lake Michigan with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Sasha, 7, and Malia, 9.

What's Happening: The addition of 200 miles of bike lanes by mid-'09; five-borough bike backbone in place by 2010; named a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, the only Eastern-seaboard city to earn such a distinction

Why: City leaders realized crowded streets couldn't handle expected population growth; mayor Bloomberg hired the right DOT commissioner

There's a strange dichotomy facing bicycling in San Francisco, and it's spelled out in the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's "2007 Citywide Bicycle Counts Report," which features a cover photo of Mayor Gavin Newsom and me pedaling up Market Street together on Bike to Work Day two years ago.

This is National Bike-To-Work Week.

We have our own Bike Month activities here in NYC, serving up every counterculture taste from a bicycle film series to classes on how to draw bikes to a group ride for folding bicycles. Over 100 people showed up for the latter, almost three times the number who came last year. Biking is big in New York, and by all accounts it's getting bigger, as the city, driven (so to speak) by bike-friendly Mayor Bloomberg tries to remold the city for two wheelers.

Also this morning, Lehrer hosted New York Times reporter John Broder for a segment on the Clinton-Obama gas tax divide.

Let us pray.
